Leaning on tree-lined Church Street, Amangallas noteworthy veranda and
magnificent Great Hall, or Zaal as it was known in Dutch times, welcomes
guests much as they did from 1683 as part of what was at that time the New
Oriental Hotel. Offering views of the Fort and harbour on one side and the
hotels opulent gardens and swimming pool on the other, the lofty-ceilinged
bedrooms with traditional furniture radiate a feel of place. The free-standing
Garden House tells its own dreamy story while the hotels atmospheric spa
complex, The Baths, offers Ayurvedic therapies, hydrotherapy facilities, a yoga
pavilion, barber shop and salon. The ramparts of Galle Fort grip in a sparkling
spell case fine trails lined with ancient houses, basilicas, boutiques and
restaurants underneath terracotta-tiled roofs. The highlight of my stay here
apart from my suite and the Spa is experiencing a conventional roti dinner in
Amangallas rural Ambalama pavilion as fireflies ballet in the rice paddies
around and dining below the stars together with the hotels pool, with a
tailored menu (in this case a local SriLankan meal), twinkling lights cascading
from the trees and a resident flutist or a spirited performer offering showbiz.
Private dining can also take place on the cosy Library Terrace, just so you know.
Just stride off Amangallas portico to discover this world, or endeavour further
afield to discern the regions temples, tea plantations and beaches on tailored
journeys. Relax with a signature massage the perfect way to unwind at the
end of a stylish holiday away. I loved the uniquely SriLankan kind of
extravagance hotel service. The workforce appeared mindful that guests at the
worlds outstanding hotels not only anticipate superb and immaculate service, but also an outstanding cultural individuality. I have never experienced before
such sumptuous hospitality, Affability, prudence and devotion to detail. so I
left AmanGalla, refreshed and renewed!

This decadent destination on SriLankas southern shore syndicates glamorous tropical beauty with elegant refinement. From the graceful suites, to the
striking infinity pool, posh restaurant and the brands trademark boutique, this
may be SriLanakas chicest holiday address. The resort is distinguished for its
Geoffrey Bawa motivated architecture, which is apparent from the first
glimpse. The design is minimal and environmental, with all materials enthused
by the resorts surroundings. Native plants and trees, local wood and stone,
immerses guests into SriLankan culture. The resort is dotted amid luxuriant
fairy-tale gardens, creating an Eden-like atmosphere that feels lost in time.
Romantic pathways lead to the secluded suites, neighbouring the striking
central structure which contains a library, lounge and bar, the restaurant
perched above the famed swimming pool overlooking the Ocean which
appears to float above the maze below. Dining here is a feast in more ways
than one. The eyes are fed with views of the pool, the valley and the Ocean,
plus at night the glow of hundreds of candles; its very romantic. The menu
places priority on local and organic ingredients. Breakfast is a splendid button-
busting event; tropical fruits, curd with treacle, breads, cheese as well as an
la carte menu of eggs, waffles and SriLankan specialities. Guests can also
order food and drinks by the pool and at the beach side.
The suites feel more like luxurious private homes than resort rooms. Dcor has
been kept simple but stylish with swathes of cream travertine, warm woods
with aesthetic art and glass doors sliding open onto private pools. Bathrooms
are vast with double sinks, and stand-alone tubs big enough for two. Come
bedtime, nod off to a natural lullaby of the crashing Indian Ocean. Service here
is Exceptional. Everybody appears to see what you requisite afore you even
know it yourself. You can spend your mornings lying by the pool or getting a
hang of cooking SriLankan cuisine at the resorts private beach followed by
lunch and lazing on one of the beach beds while you get a foot massage done
or you can simple while away entire afternoons at the wonderful Spa. The resident staff have a true passion for the village and resort, which comes across in their insider tips and a fortitude that you not only enjoy your stay, but tell others about it. Do not miss a floating lounge river cruise at Sunset on the Mawella Lake amid nature, specially curated by the resortits surreal. Extraordinary in every way.

ABOUT THE MAN WHO MAKES THIS PLACE SO SPECIAL
Pantelis Korovilas
Country Manager Amangalla & Amanwella, SriLanka
Grew up in America (Midwest) to parents who migrated from Greece. Grew up
to typical Greek Immigrants who were in the local restaurant scene. Budding
up in a tiny business milieu and customer service being number one priority
due to competition with big brand restaurants laid the groundwork for me
always having customer service as number 1 priority and probably destined to
be working in hospitality, says Korovilas
Korovilas began working in hotels while working at university as a bartender
and the hotel itch grew more and more. After several years of working for
smaller hotel brands, joined the Four Seasons Group in Dec 2002. Ritz-Carlton
Chicago (was managed by Four Seasons from 1977-2015 and only Ritz-Carlton
managed by FS) was his first luxury hotel experience. Decided to go into
Rooms Division, since he had grown up in the F&B world. Over the 8 years, he
worked in multiple rooms management positions, Housekeeping, Guest
Services, Front Office. After Chicago, joined London and Beirut hotels and left
FS in 2015, after 13 years.
He took some time off with his wife and they enjoyed travelling globally,
before joining Aman in March 2016. It was forever an objective of mine to
work where my parents were native to and raised, and that aim was met.
Aman group found me and asked if I would like to join Amanzoe in Greece as
the Villas Manager. This was the start of my Aman experience and could not
have chosen a better hotel company to be part of. Aman concept and level of
personalized service is exactly what I was looking for. I was fortunate to assist
at various Amans globally during the winter seasons, when the resort would
close seasonal. First winter was in Sri Lanka to assist managing Amangalla and
the second winter was assisting with opening Amanyanyun Villas in Shanghai.
By my third winter, I moved to Sri Lanka and promoted to General Manager of
our beautiful beach resort, Amanwella. After two years, I was promoted to Sri
Lanka Country Manager and began overseeing Amangalla also, shares
