The age-old debate of losing weight or keeping your weight in check has been a topic of discussion for quite some time now. Especially in the current digital age, this topic feels more relevant than ever. With everyone working towards their ideal body type or simply maintaining their current weight, weight management has taken center stage. We hear a lot of talk or advice on how exactly to stay fit, lose weight and even get a decent looking body type through diet alone. Some people go to extreme measures to the point where it is considered almost unhealthy and some go so far as to eating just a light meal once a day to achieve their goals.
For anyone trying to achieve their ideal weight goal would be to exercise. But, since we live on a very busy day and age, exercise may not be the most viable option for us. Balancing work and life, in general, will leave most of us with very little time to head to the gym and work out a sweat. For such individuals, it is recommended that controlling their diet is the best solution. Many readily available foods with high protein count is a must for those especially trying to lose weight while a steady balance of protein and carbs are recommended for those trying to keep their weight constant. Here are a few ways to stay fit and keep your weight in check.Breakfast is King
By now we have all heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This is not based on rumors that have been passed down for years. It has been scientifically proven that eating a healthy breakfast every day has led to significant steps towards losing weight and keeping it in check. Eating a bowl of oatmeal or fruits or cereals is an effective way of starting your day and helps fuel your body for the day ahead. Nepalese like to go onboard with oily breakfast snacks and as good as they taste, they are probably the worst way to start your day with. Our body is like a well-oiled machine that needs healthy food to perform at its best. While occasionally eating the oily snacks may be acceptable, it is doing more harm than good if eaten on a daily basis.
Studies have also shown that people who eat breakfast regularly have recorded more weight loss on average than those who skip it altogether. But it is important to note that skipping breakfast doesnt necessarily mean that you will gain weight.Stay On A Calorie Deficit Diet
Daily, humans consume an average of 2000 calories every day. This, of course, will vary from person to person. It is recommended that people who are trying to lose weight consume fewer calories than they burn. For instance, a person who is on a 3000 calorie diet but burns on average less than 1500 calories is less likely to lose weight. They are in fact more prone to gaining a few pounds.
For best results, consulting a dietitian and figuring out the best type of diet for your body is the best way to go about achieving a calorie deficit diet. If youre not a very active person and want to lose/maintain weight, a calorie deficit diet will go a long way in helping you stay healthy. It is important to note that consulting a medical professional before making drastic changes in your diet is a must.Understanding the Nutrients
The average Nepali diet consists of a lot of fats and carbs daily. We need rice for almost every meal along with some type of buffalo meat and maybe some potatoes to go with it. Add to that a few cups of tea with lots of sugar and our daily limit for carbs is already exceeded. Typically we consume fats and carbs in very large quantities knowingly and unknowingly. Granted if we consume healthy fats and moderate our carb intake, Nepali people wouldnt have to deal with factors such as obesity and the various weight-related diseases that plague the general population.
While we go overboard with fats and carbs, we tend to eat very little protein-heavy foods. Proteins help reduce appetite and keep your body feeling full. Proteins have also been known to keep the bodyweight in moderation and given that it helps you stay full, it may reduce the calories we consume throughout the day. Similarly consuming fiber heavy foods help you stay full for longer periods and can even help you avoid various heart-related diseases.
Water Is Your Best Friend
It cant be stressed how important staying hydrated is for your body. Not only does it help everything in your body run smoothly, it also ensures your body remains full. Studies have shown that drinking a glass of water before every meal significantly reduces the number of calories you will consume. Given you consume fewer calories you will likely lose a few kilos as a result. It is recommended that daily, drinking a minimum of 2 liters of water is sufficient for your body. Switching to water as your primary drink will help you stay off sugary drinks that are calorie heavy.Know Your Body
Much can be said about avoiding certain types of food while consuming large quantities of certain food. A diet that works very well for one person wont do the same for someone else. It is important to understand your body and body type and work around it. Research, experiment and consult with medical professionals before finding the right kind of diet for yourself. Keep in mind the importance of patience that is required in processes like these. Many people will likely deter you from achieving your desired goals so staying consistent is another important factor in this journey. It is also ok to treat yourself to a cheat meal now and then. Our body has cravings too and giving in to those cravings can even be healthy if consumed in moderation.
If the diet isnt working for you as intended, get physically active. It doesnt have to be by joining the gym. You can burn calories by walking home or walking to work. Getting adequate rest for your body is just as important as your diet. Lastly, make sure that you have a support system that can help you stay on track and nudge you to the right direction if you start to stray afar.
