Often during summer, a lot of us look for ways to beat the heat. We resort to many things like drinking chilled drinks, going for a swim or blasting the fan at yourself. All these are short-term work around that provide us with some much-needed relief from the heat. Around the world, people have discovered various ways to keep their bodies cool during the summer and not be bothered by the scorching summer heat. Of all the countless methods used, very few people resort to food as a cooling substance during this period. Believe it or not, food is a very effective way of keeping your body temperatures at cooler levels and helps regulate all the heat that you face. It helps you tolerate heat better and reduces any chances of heat exhaustions or heat rashes. To help you fight the heat this summer, we have listed different kinds of food that will help you the next couple of months: Curd As delicious as curd is, it also has a cooling effect to the body. Especially in Nepal with so many variations of local curd to go around, you can have your pick of the lot and enjoy a chilled serving. If you want to mix it up, you can make various drinks out of it too. If you dont enjoy the regular form of curd, variations of it are abundant such as the spicy buttermilk, sweet lassi or even toss in a few seasonal fruits to turn it into a delicious smoothie. Rich with Vitamin B and gut-friendly bacteria, curd soothes the body from within. In addition to keeping your body temperature cooler, curd also helps in keeping your digestive system running smoothly. Coconut Water Coconut water is one of the best summer drinks out there. While it may be a little difficult to find it in Kathmandu, a little searching will help you find it. The drink should be available fruit shops around the city. Coconut water is packed vitamins and minerals and cooling properties that help you fight against the hot weather. The minerals also help replenish any nutrients your body loses after sweating. It is one of the purest forms of natural energy drinks. As a bonus, studies also show that drinking coconut water regularly also protect against cancer. Cucumbers This goes without saying but cucumbers are one of the best remedies for cooling your body during the summer or any point of time in the year. They contain almost ninety percent water in them meaning that you are feeding yourself at the same time as youre keeping yourself hydrated. Like curd, you can have cucumber in various ways; salads, dips or cucumber juice but really, you dont need to go all the way. The simplest form is perhaps the best when it comes to cucumbers, i.e. washing and eating it. But, a little variation is good too. Plus, theyre super cheap and easily available everywhere. Additionally, cucumbers are packed with fibre that keeps constipation at bay and also helps in hangovers after that summer night filled with booze. Mint The words mint and cool are practically synonymous. This herb is easily available at most vendors and supermarkets. While not often eaten as it is, mint can be eaten in various forms. You can also prepare mint chutney or achaar, which is a common sight in Nepali households. You can also prepare smoothies or use it as an ingredient in many dishes. Mint not only keeps your body temperature cool but also gives you a refreshing effect. Apart from eating mint, you can also use peppermint oil to give you that chilly feeling and to help relieve stress. Mint is amazingly healthy and abundantly available. If nothing else, mint flavored ice creams are available too. Watermelon As tasty as they are, watermelons are very healthy for the body too. This quintessential summer fruit is readily available during the summer season. It contains about 90 percent water, which helps in fulfilling your bodys water requirement. Theyre also loaded with anti-oxidants properties that give your body a much needed cooling effect during the summer. They also have a very low calories count so for all the health conscious people out there, watermelon is a very good option to have. The high water content will also keep you feeling full, which could curb cravings. Watermelons also contain lycopene, which protects skin cells from sun damage. If youre not into watermelons, musk melons is another great option to consider. Avocado For anyone who has had a taste of avocado, they know how good avocados are. But given its expensive pricing many of us tend to stay away from it. It is also one of those fruits that ripen very fast and needs to be consumed at the right time. Regardless, avocados remain one of the healthiest fruits around. They contain the highest amounts of monosaturated fatty acids that remove heat and toxins from the blood. Avocados are also easily digested, so your body will not need to work extra hard and create more heat to digest the food. So take advantage of those perfectly ripe summer avocados and cool down with one of these recipes. Although it could be lumped in with nuts as a healthy source of monounsaturated fats, its a super food which deserves a placeholder of its own. If plain avocados are not for you, then blend it into a smoothie and enjoy its benefits. Zucchini Zucchini is a type of summer squash that can range in color from yellow to a dark green. In addition to containing vitamin C, antioxidants and important anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, zucchini is a great source of manganese. The mineral can help protect your body from susceptible sun damage and promotes collagen production and healthy bone tissue growth. Zucchini contains zero fat, and is high in water and fiber. It also contains significant amounts of vitamins B6, riboflavin, folate, C, and K, and minerals. Water It might seem obvious, but water really is your best friend when the temperature rises, so do make sure that you drink a lot of it to make up for fluids lost through extra perspiration. Drink filtered water from a glass instead of a plastic bottle to avoid more plastic pollution. There is no substitute to drinking water or keeping your body cool like water does. Drink it in abundance to ensure that your body doesnt weaken due to the heat. Also, keep in mind that your cravings for ice cream or ice-cold beer will actually make you feel hotter. Foods that contain more fat, protein and complex carbohydrates heat the body up while digesting that food. The temperature difference of cold foods have an initial cooling effect, but when your body starts digesting the food or drink, your body temperature rises as your body produces energy to digest what you have eaten or drunk. Similarly, alcohol causes dehydration and flushing which causes the widening of blood vessels, which increases your body temperature, and make you feel hot. Apart from all the listed food, countless other foods serve as a coolant for the body. Foods like chili can make you sweat, causing your body to trigger its cooling mechanisms. It is important to consult with a dietitian before making significant dietary changes to your life.
